BUTT-HOLDSWORTH MEMORIAL LIBRARY

INTERNET USE POLICY

LIBRARY MISSION

  The Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library's mission is to provide the means for people of all ages, interests and circumstances in the community to benefit from the recorded wisdom, experiences and ideas of others. Public Internet access is part of our effort to achieve this mission. Because so many different people and organizations contribute to this vast, rapidly changing information resource, the information is not controlled or monitored. While it is true that much valuable information may be found via Internet searching, there are also sites that contain inaccurate, misleading, and offensive information.

UNAUTHORIZED USE

Using Internet resources for educational, informational, and recreational purposes only. These computer terminals are not to be used for illegal, unauthorized or unethical purposes.

Not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

Respecting the privacy of others using Internet access terminals at the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library by not interfering with their use.

Making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data.

USE LIMITS

The library limits use of all Internet workstations to 60 minutes if others are waiting.

Users must keep privacy screens provided in place.

Parents of minor children are responsible for their children's use of Internet at the library (as well as other library materials).

No more than two users can share a terminal unless the librarian authorizes an exception.

Please close down all sites visited at the conclusion of each use.

Print jobs may be limited. Large files will not be printed.

PRIVACY

Patrons have the right of confidentiality and the right of privacy. Users should be advised, however, that because security is technically difficult to achieve and computers are located in public areas, electronic transactions of files and viewing screens could become public. As a result, the Library cannot guarantee privacy or confidentiality.

Examples of inappropriate use include, but are not limited to, the following:

Use of sounds or visuals which might be disruptive to others;

Violation of computer system integrity

Unauthorized tampering with computer hardware or software;

Storage of data to disc or hard drive; violation of software license agreements and copyright laws;

Violation of another user's privacy;

Use of Internet workstation for purposes other than Internet access

The library does not provide individual electronic mail accounts. Other businesses offer free email accounts on the Internet. Patrons may use the Library's Internet computer to access accounts obtained through these services as long as they do not require any alteration of the computer's resources or files.
